VIC:Man loses legs in fun gone wrong
By Joel Cresswell
MELBOURNE, Aug 22 AAP - Playing around with chemicals in a Victorian backyard has left
two men fighting for their lives with injuries not normally seen outside a war zone.
One man lost both legs and another suffered life-threatening burns when a homemade
explosive device blew up at the rural home.
The two men were mixing chemicals in a container in front of a group of neighbours
at the Cannons Creek property, southeast of Melbourne, when it exploded shortly after
11pm (AEST) on Sunday.
Both men are now fighting for their lives in Melbourne hospitals.
A paramedic on scene, Ben Meadley, likened the injuries to those typically found in
a war zone, saying a 24-year-old man had "complete or near amputation" of his legs and
a hand.
"One (patient) had severe airway burns and the second patient suffered severe blast-type
injuries, the type of injury you'd more liken to what you'd see in a war situation rather
than in outer suburban Melbourne," he said.
It's believed the accident was essentially fun gone wrong.
The two men were mixing the chemicals to make an improvised explosive device, possibly
a rocket, in front of neighbours and may have been planning to bury it when it exploded.
Arson squad Senior Detective Cameron Lunny said the men were experimenting with the chemicals.
"They were just having a bit of a muck around I think," Sen Det Lunny told reporters.
"There's certainly no indication it was anything apart from just experimenting."
A 24-year-old Pakenham man, with blast injuries and burns to his face and airways,
remains in a critical condition in the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
He was given a blood transfusion in the helicopter en route to hospital.
"Due to his severe blast injuries he'd lost quite a lot of blood," Mr Meadley said.
"We were able to give him quite a bit of blood and resuscitate his blood pressure.
Then we were able to give him some powerful drugs and ... put him into an induced coma."
A 23-year-old Cannons Creek man suffered burns to his face, arms and airway and is
in a critical condition in The Alfred hospital.
Neighbours said the explosion was felt in nearby homes.
"I believe a lot of the neighbours who were up to a few hundred metres away felt their
houses rock, so it was quite a large explosion," Mr Meadley told ABC radio.
Neighbour Judy Gibbs said it was a huge explosion.
"I'd gone to bed and next minute there was this great, big, loud explosion - the windows
in my house shook, the whole house shook," she told the ABC.

QLD:Bligh encourages Spence to stay
BRISBANE, Aug 27 AAP - Queensland Premier Anna Bligh is encouraging a long-serving
Labor state MP not to resign mid-term.
On Thursday, former police, corrective services and sport minister, Judy Spence, who
left cabinet after the 2009 election, announced she was considering quitting.
The resignation of the Sunnybank MP, who was elected in 1989 and has held cabinet roles
since 2001, would trigger a by-election, which Labor could expect to lose given current
voter unrest over the Bligh government.
On Friday morning, Ms Bligh praised Ms Spence's efforts as a parliamentary performer
and local member.
"Judy will consider this matter - that's a personal decision for herself and her family,"
the premier said.
"I would obviously like to see Judy finish her term ... but ultimately it's a decision for her."
Ms Spence is currently leader of the house and parliamentary secretary to the premier.

NSW: NSW Maritime lawyer thought private work was allowed
By Lisa Martin
SYDNEY, April 20 AAP - A senior lawyer for NSW Maritime who ran a private business
from her office says her unpaid overtime permitted her to use the authority's resources.
Tonette Kelly, who was acting general counsel at NSW Maritime until October 2009, is
being investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).
The ICAC inquiry has heard that in 2003 Ms Kelly sought written permission from Maritime's
then CEO, Matthew Taylor, to do a small amount of conveyancing work at home.
The request was approved on the basis that the work would not conflict with her role.
The approval document, tendered to the inquiry on Tuesday, said the conveyancing work
would take up approximately four hours a week.
Counsel assisting the commissioner Jeremy Gormly put to Ms Kelly that her conveyancing
work had in fact "massively exceeded" what she had put in her application.
"It was 10 times the amount of work which you described in the memorandum," Mr Gormly said.
Ms Kelly denied the accusation.
"Eileen (Ms Kelly's sister) was doing it, not me," she told the inquiry.
Ms Kelly admitted she had advertised her conveyancing service in a Century 21 real
estate brochure that printed her work number.
"(There was) spare space, and it was the only time I ever promoted myself at all," she said.
She told the inquiry it was a long-established practice at the authority for solicitors
to do conveyancing work on the side and use its resources in exchange for unpaid overtime
hours.
"I thought it was permitted," she said.
Ms Kelly said three solicitors had been doing this in 1988 when she started work at NSW Maritime.
"It was a practice already going on," she said.
The inquiry heard Ms Kelly often worked from 6am until 7pm Monday to Friday and sometimes
would stay at the office overnight.
She also claimed she was entitled to be paid for 21 overtime hours per month under
an enterprise agreement but had never been paid for them.
Ms Kelly agreed it would be impossible to conveyance up to 100 matters a year without
doing a considerable amount of work, such as legal searches and taking client phone calls,
during business hours.
She said she did some of her conveyancing work in business hours because she had flexible
working hours.
Earlier on Tuesday, documents tendered to the commission showed Ms Kelly's legal searches
for her private conveyancing business totalled $10,296 between 2003 and 2009, and were
paid for by the authority.
Mr Gormly said Ms Kelly was receiving search fees from clients but not reimbursing NSW Maritime.
He said she also had a personal account for legal searches, but it was only used for
searches that would raise suspicions and were unlikely to be accepted by the authority.
Ms Kelly is due to continue her evidence on Tuesday afternoon.

STEVE INSKEEP, host:
The star known to millions as Hannah Montana says she's embarrassed. Miley Cyrus is 15 years old, and she appears in Vanity Fair magazine wearing only a sheet. NPR's Kim Masters reports this is not the first time a Disney star's behavior has clashed with a carefully cultivated image.
KIM MASTERS: The pictures have set off a raging controversy, not just because Miley Cyrus is young, but because she's made a point of promoting a wholesome image, as in this scene from her hit show, "Hannah Montana."
(Soundbite of TV show, "Hannah Montana")
Ms. MILEY CYRUS (Actress, Singer): (as Hannah Montana) Listen guys, it's all my dad's fault. We had a deal. School always comes first, and if I can't get at least a B in Biology, the closest we're going to get Paris is (unintelligible).
MASTERS: Disney, the company behind Cyrus's show and merchandise and movies, has attacked Vanity Fair, saying, quote, "A situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines." Vanity Fair responded in a statement that the young star's parents and/or minders were on the set and saw a digital version of the photo and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait. One thing that seems clear is that Cyrus is in what you might call an awkward tween stage.
(Soundbite of music)
Ms. CYRUS: (Singing) I've got a way of knowing when something is right.
MASTERS: On Allykatzz, the social networking site for girls 10 to 15, there are many posts with different takes on the photo spread. OMG, reads one. She is being way too mature for 15. Others say Cyrus was trying to show she's growing up. Denise Restuari runs Allykatzz and says reaction in the posts is mixed, but there is consensus on one point.
Ms. DENISE RESTUARI (Web Master, Allykatzz): That most the girls are saying that she's disappointing us or disappointing the younger girl because she's supposed to be a role model.
MASTERS: Restuari thinks the reaction to the pictures has been amplified because other provocative shots of Cyrus has turned up lately on the Internet, such as one where she flashes a lime green bra under her tank top. And the disappointment isn't just about Miley Cyrus.
Ms. RESTUARI: You're dealing with girls who, their hearts have been broken by Britney, by Lindsey, by the celebrities they loved.
MASTERS: Britney, Lindsey, and, of course, "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens, who's revealing photos made the rounds on the Internet. And that's leaving aside Nickelodeon's problem with Jamie Lynn Spears, star of "Zoey 101," pregnant at 16.
Ms. JOEY BARTOLOMEO (Senior Writer, Us Magazine): You have to sort of expect things are going to happen when you have these young women kind of getting older and doing more things that maybe aren't so G rated.
MASTERS: Joey Bartolomeo is a senior writer for Us Weekly Magazine. She says the middle-teens are tough for stars whose fans tend to be younger.
Ms. BARTOLOMEO: They're kind of outgrowing the 10-year-olds, but at the same time, those are their fans.
MASTERS: Bartolomeo thinks Cyrus may have gotten ahead of herself with the Vanity Fair photos, but she doesn't think they'll necessarily hurt her.
Ms. BARTOLOMEO: People are talking about her, which is a good thing. And people are maybe looking at her in a different light, and not like, oh, well, she's just this girl in the Disney Channel. So in a way, this could help her.
MASTERS: But to Denise Restuari, it seems too soon for Miley Cyrus to turn her back on the young girls who make up her fan base.
Ms. RESTUARI: So when you're making billions like she is and you're selling out concerts and you're doing everything, you really don't need the publicity right now. And I'm sitting there thinking, but why?
MASTERS: It's a safe bet that millions of Hannah Montana fans are asking the same question.

FED: Recession in Aust is not inevitable: Swan
CANBERRA, Dec 24 AAP - Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan is continuing to talk up the economy
as other countries around the world slide into recession.
Mr Swan on Wednesday refused to concede that Australia was likely to follow other nations
by sliding into recession on the back of a global economic slowdown.
"I don't think anything is inevitable," Mr Swan told Fairfax Radio Network on Wednesday.
"What we have to do is everything we possibly can in the face of this very big dramatic
change in the global economic outlook and what it has done to demand in our goods and
services."
Mr Swan said there was no doubt the global economy was continuing to slow, but added
that Australia was in a strong position to weather the financial storm.
Most of Europe, Japan, the United States were already in recession and the government
had been acutely aware of such a prospect some time ago, the treasurer said.
Mr Swan reiterated that the government moved early to "protect jobs and to do something
about lifting demand in the economy, to strengthen our economy in the face of all of this".
The comments come as new figures showed the US economy was continuing to tank.
The world's biggest economy contracted by 0.5 per cent during the September quarter,
the US Department of Commerce said overnight.
New US home sales dropped 2.9 per cent to 407,000 in November, their lowest level since
January, 1991, the US Department of Commerce said.
Purchases of both new and existing houses declined 7.6 per cent in November to an annual
rate of 4.43 million, the National Association of Realtors said.
It was the biggest fall since January 1989.
But Mr Swan said Australians should remain positive about the future of the domestic economy.
"We need businesses and consumers to be out there with a positive frame of mind, and
the government is going to do everything it possibly can in the midst of the global financial
crisis to encourage that."

WA: Barnett stands by "compromised" environment spokesman

WA: Barnett stands by "compromised" environment spokesman
PERTH, Aug 17 AAP - West Australian Opposition Leader Colin Barnett is standing by
his environment spokesman, Steve Thomas, who has come under attack for renting a house
from a mining company.
Labor says Dr Thomas, who could become environment minister if the opposition wins
power in the September 6 state election, had made comments in support of the company and
had compromised himself.
Minister for the South-West, Mark McGowan, called on the opposition leader to ditch Dr Thomas.
"I think he (Mr Barnett) should get rid of Steve," Mr McGowan said.
Dr Thomas rented a house from Bemax Resources, which includes mineral company Cable
Sands, for $50 a week between December 2005 and June 2006 in the south-west town of Gwindinup.
A letter from the company to Dr Thomas says the house was rented on the proviso he
paint and carpet it and bring it up to a liveable standard.
Bemax says the rent was so low because the house was very close to its mine and two
other tenants had since rented it for a similar price.
However, Labor says Dr Thomas should have declared the arrangement on parliament's
financial interests register.
Mr McGowan says Dr Thomas spoke in support of Cable Sands, including comments to a
regional newspaper saying a new environmental contamination law would be an "impost" on
the company.
"To have received a house for $30 to $50 a week, I think, compromises you and Mr Thomas
should have known better," he said.
But Dr Thomas says Labor is playing "gutter politics".
He says he simply made a statement of fact when he said Cable Sands and other companies
would be impacted on by the new law.
"Where in that do I say they should get any special treatment. It's a comment that
says they will be impacted," Dr Thomas said.
"If I was the minister for the environment I would have made exactly the same comment,
which was that they would be impacted and they are impacted."
Mr Barnett today told reporters there was no reason to sack Dr Thomas.
"My understanding is that he and his family rented a fairly dilapidated house while
they were rebuilding their house," Mr Barnett said.
"Other people rented similar houses on exactly the same conditions."

Vic: Aborigines die 17 years early: report
Victorian Aborigines have a reduced life span .. are more likely to drop out of school
or wind up in prison .. and have fewer employment prospects than their non-indigenous
counterparts.
A report .. tabled today in state parliament .. says Aborigines die on average 17 years
younger than non-indigenous Victorians .. and are more vulnerable to crime .. poverty
and chronic disease.
The cycle of disadvantage begins at birth .. with Aborigines more likely to be born underweight.
Aboriginal children are nine times more likely to be exposed to child abuse .. and
almost 40 per cent live in single-parent families.
Fewer than a quarter of Aborigines finish high school .. and about 14 per cent don't
make it past year nine.
Education deficiencies spiral into later life .. limiting job prospects and income.
More than half of indigenous households are on low incomes and Aborigines have twice
the unemployment rate of other Victorians.
They are also 12 times more likely to be locked up in prison or a youth detention centre
.. and three times more likely to be murdered.
The report says the most telling gap in health and wellbeing between indigenous and
non indigenous Victorians is life expectancy.
It says the gap can be thought of as the accumulation of a lifetime of disadvantage.
The Victorian Indigenous Affairs Framework was developed last year to try and close
the life expectancy of the state's 30-thousand Aborigines.
It focuses on improving child health and safety .. justice before the law .. school
participation and employment outcomes.

Fed: Patron management not two-up the problem: Billson
CANBERRA, April 24 AAP - Pubs and establishments that ban the traditional Anzac Day
game of two-up cannot manage their own patrons, Veterans Affairs Minister Bruce Billson
says.
Several pubs and at least one club in NSW have reportedly cancelled the game on Anzac
Day because some people get drunk and cause trouble.
Mr Billson said the real issue is with the patrons and not the game.
"Two-up is part of the heritage, the culture of Anzac Day, I have not seen anybody
injured or harmed by a game of two-up," Mr Billson told the Nine Network.
"For the establishments that feel they can't manage their patrons, that's a worry in
it's own right.
"Having an opportunity for two-up on Anzac Day is part of the tradition and I am surprised
that some people feel the need to shut that down.
"It seems more an issue about how they may manage their regular patrons not an issue
of two-up itself."

CANBERRA, Aug 16 AAP - Women senators from all sides of politics will show their support
for moves to ensure pregnancy counselling services provide unbiased abortion information.
Activists groups will present Liberal senator Judith Adams, Labor senator Claire Moore,
Greens senator Kerry Nettle and Australian Democrats senator Natasha Stott Despoja with
a petition signed by more than 15,000 people calling for an end to deceptive advertising.
Concerns have been raised that some services are biased and try to dissuade pregnant
women from having an abortion.
The presentation comes the day before a governmental committee will hand down its report
into laws regulating services.
The committee is reviewing a private member's bill Senator Stott Despoja moved in the
Senate calling for government funding to services who engage in misleading or deceptive
advertising to be cut.
Senator Stott Despoja originally tabled the petition, then containing 13,000 signatures,
in the Senate in June.
The presentation today is designed to show the legislation has cross party support.
The Senate committee has been considering whether Senator Stott Despoja's legislation
improves services and ensures government-funded counselling services are objective, non-directive,
and includes information on all pregnancy options.
Its report is due by Thursday.
The government in March announced a $50 million package designed to cut Australia's
termination rate that includes a 24-hour advice hotline for pregnant women and a Medicare
rebate for pregnancy-related counselling.
It followed a parliamentary vote to lift an effective ban on abortion drug RU486 by
stripping Health Minister Tony Abbott of his veto powers over the drug.
Opponents of the plan believe it is biased because it excludes doctors with links to
abortion clinics but includes church-affiliated groups.

BulkRegister.com Enables New Non-Profit '2-1-1' Domain Names.
Leading Domain Name Registrar Contributes Domain Name Registrations for
New FCC-Approved Exchange to Help Those in Need
BALTIMORE, July 21 /PRNewswire/ --
BulkRegister.com, the leading provider of wholesale, high-volume domain name registration services, announced today that it has donated domain name registrations for a series of "2-1-1" names on behalf of its charitable partner, the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS). This announcement comes on the heels of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) plans of adopting a new three-digit telephone number for quick access to non-emergency human services and community information (Associated Press, 7/21/00, 12:52 PM ET). Under the FCC's plan, families and individuals needing shelter, food or crisis counseling could find assistance through the abbreviated dialing code of 2-1- 1.
AIRS, a non-profit information and referral organization established in 1973 to bring people and services together, wanted to protect 2-1-1 domain names from being registered by speculators who could scramble to acquire the registration of thousands of names in the .org top-level-domain (TLD).
Peter Aberg, Executive Director of AIRS, commented that "Non-profits are especially vulnerable in the new economy where the digital divide separates the have's from the have not's. BulkRegister.com's donation of registration services will help AIRS ensure that the 2-1-1 domain names registered will be used by bona fide non-profits that choose to develop websites in connection with the names."
BulkRegister.com CEO, Tony Keyes, added, "By providing domain name registration for such critical 2-1-1 sites, we help to empower AIRS to educate those who want to support their mission. We are ecstatic that we can share our success with innovative organizations like AIRS to make vital social services available to all who need them. The reality is, people need information from as many sources as possible, especially in times of personal crisis. That is why having a 2-1-1 phone number coupled with a 2-1-1 Internet address is vital for non-profits and charitable organizations in the 21st century."
About AIRS and the 211 Collaborative
The easy to remember and universally accessible 2-1-1 number will allow callers in need to more easily make critical connections with appropriate community-based organizations and government agencies. By linking those who need help with those who can give help, 2-1-1 promotes self-sufficiency and self-directedness. Information and referral (I&R) specialists assess callers' needs and determine the service provider best equipped to handle them. "2-1-1 makes it possible for people in need to navigate the complex and ever-growing maze of human services' agencies and programs." said Peter Aberg, executive director of AIRS. "People will be able to easily access one-stop shops for their human service needs."
AIRS is a membership organization for nearly 1,000 providers of community information and referral services nationwide. The "2-1-1 Collaborative" includes the following national organizations: AIRS, United Way of America, The National Association of State Units on Aging, The National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies in addition to 25 other regional and local organizations. More information about 2-1-1, including national and state contacts, press coverage and a map showing 2-1-1 progress throughout the U.S. can be found on their website: www.211.org. We'll need more housing, Mr. Flickinger says, to keep up with population growth, but retail will exist in such a different form that onetime stores will be converted into living spaces, rather than be razed.
"Because so much of our mundane routine shopping will be done over the Internet, like ordering food, moisturizer and pantyhose, what we'll want is experiential shopping," says Wendy Liebmann, president of New York consultancy WSL Strategic Retail. "When you do go shopping, it will be to customize particular products, or to enjoy a particular experience."
There is general agreement among trend-watchers, however, that we're all going to be glued to our ergonomically correct chairs, watching screens of various sorts until our eyeballs bug out of their sockets (although there will be an industry devoted to the creation of newer and better eyes, both Mr. Flickinger and Ms. Liebmann believe).
All that sitting will require us to somehow get our exercise and meet our fitness needs, which, Ms. Liebmann believes, will be aided by the very clothing we wear.
"The whole concept of health will pervade everything we do and everything we use," she says. "We already see it in beauty products, but we'll also see it in apparel, whether it's clothing to protect us from the sun, since there will be no ozone layer, or clothing that somehow keeps our bodies moving while we're sitting in front of the computer, multitasking."
There may well be chairs that automatically adjust to the correct height while we're "screening," as well as providing in-chair massage, and active apparel that tones and buffs while we sit, she says.
Since the entertainment provided on screens, whether TV, the Internet or some device soon to be invented, will be so compelling, we will continue to dress in ever-more-casual apparel.
"We'll be out of shape and we won't care," says Mr. Flickinger. "We'll be dressed all in Gap, we'll be wired for instant communications and everything we desire will come directly to our electronically controlled homes."
Ah, the future has never looked so . . . electric.

Sullivan, Editor in Chief of Search Engine Land, will hold an Evening Forum on Tuesday, September 13, in which he will moderate as attendees share their thoughts, ideas, challenges and knowledge on search marketing. With the audience as the panel, it turns the traditional keynote on its head and promises to be thought-provoking and dynamic.
Eli Pariser will lead off on Wednesday, September 14 at 9 am in a keynote conversation with Search Engine Land editors Danny Sullivan and Chris Sherman.
Pariser's book, "The Filter Bubble: What the Internet is Hiding From You," examines the impact of personalization on the web, and how the information we receive online is being filtered by algorithms according to what it appears we want to read.
Reviews of The Filter Bubble:
"a[bar]a compelling deep-dive into the invisible algorithmic editing on the web, a world where we're being show more of what algorithms think we want to see and less of what we should see." -- Maria Popova, The Atlantic Monthly
"a[bar]a nuanced critique of how most of us are now getting our information: through algorithms. [Pariser's] argument is simple, elegant and spot on." -- Michael Creamer, Ad Age
"If you work in search/internet marketing and want to get a better understanding of the effects of personalization, you'll like and probably learn from this book. If you work in a technology-related publishing job, this is a book that will hopefully make you think about the bigger picture and the dangers of page view journalism." -- Michael Gray, Graywolf's SEO Blog
Praise for SMX East:
"My favorite thing about the show isa[bar] the fact that you learn what you aren't doing and why you should be doing it! As a takeaway I had 5+ things that we have now started to implement to get our clients greater reach and visibility." -- Aimee Smith, Moore and Scarry Advertising
"SMX is a great digital marketing conference, covering all aspects of the digital space -- despite focusing in on how to rank competitively in Search Engines. I recommend it to any one serious about marketing -- especially on the web." -- Tim Eschenauer, Austin & Williams
"I love the content of the show. For most of the time slots there were more than one session I wanted to go to! Overall, speakers were great. Audience questions were great. Vendors were great. Wonderful experience!" -- Val Czamara, Eric Mower and Associates

Is sexting cheating?(Front)
By Jocelyn Noveck
The Associated Press
JON AUSTIN'S WIFE, Amy, had a blunt assessment for her husband as the Minneapolis couple watched Rep. Anthony Weiner's stunning confessions on television this week.
"You'd be dead," she told him.
Regardless of his professional future, it's Weiner's predicament at home that seems to be launching countless discussions among couples like the Austins. And this time, it's not a question of actual physical cheating - a la Eliot Spitzer and his prostitution scandal - but the murkier backdrop of Internet relationships: sexting, tweeting lewd photos, emailing.
If it's virtual, does it constitute infidelity? Many Americans seem to think it does.
"Would you text it, post it, send it with your spouse looking over your shoulder?" said Austin, 52, who works in corporate public relations and takes no issue with his wife's frank appraisal of the situation. "If yes, then it's not infidelity. If no, you're cheating."
In online postings and follow-up phone calls, dozens of people echoed the same thought: Cheating need not be physical.
"I think the emotional betrayal is just as bad," said Marissa Bholan, 22, a graduate student in Syracuse, N.Y. "A married person should not be flirting online - or in any manner, really. It demonstrates a clear unfaithfulness. You're married. Act like it."
For one woman in Texas, the danger of online relationships became painfully apparent when she caught a boyfriend trading amorous instant messages with an Internet friend - at one point on her own laptop.
When Beky Hayes confronted him, he told her he never felt his virtual friend was "a real person" - even though an actual, clandestine visit seemed to be in the planning stages.
"I think there's a perception that what you're doing online is somehow not real," said Hayes, a musician in Austin. "But of course it is."
And men might be more vulnerable to the lure of Internet relationships "because they allow them to escape the responsibilities and pressures of real relationships," Hayes said. She is no longer seeing that boyfriend.
A specialist in Internet addiction agrees that many people turn to online relationships to escape the pressures of their daily lives, reveling in the anonymity - particularly if, like a congressman, they are well-known.
But some, said Kimberly Young, director of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery, experience a more dangerous sense of detachment, somehow convincing themselves once the laptop is closed: "I didn't really do that. That wasn't me." And they don't see their actions as infidelity.
"I've seen married people go to great lengths to cover things up, hiding phone bills and the like," said Young, a practicing psychologist. "But they don't think it's cheating. They say, 'I love my wife.' "
Monica Turner knew something was seriously wrong when she looked at a phone bill of hundreds of pages - a record of text messages between her common-law husband and a female friend from elementary school with whom he had reconnected via Facebook.
Over a few weeks, there were thousands of messages, said Turner, 49, who works in communications and graphic design in Orlando, Fla. Her boyfriend, with whom she said she had shared eight happy years, told her she was overreacting.
"He told me he wasn't falling in love, but I wasn't sure. And in any case, I thought she was falling in love," said Turner, who even wrote a song about the ordeal: "Don't Let Facebook Screw Up Your Life."
Ultimately, Turner gave her man an ultimatum, and he ended the texting relationship, though still maintaining it was merely a friendship. "I believe him when he says that he loves me and couldn't imagine his life without me," she said.
There are precious few statistics available on adults and online relationships, partly because most research has focused on teenagers.
The most recent was a 2004 ABC News poll, in which 64 percent of adults felt that "if a person who's married or in a committed relationship has sex talk in an Internet chat room," they would consider that being unfaithful; 33 percent would not.
There are, though, recent numbers on the prevalence of sexting among adults. In a May 2010 survey from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 15 percent of adults said they had received "a sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude photo or video" on their cellphone, and 6 percent said they had sent such a text. In the 18-to-29 demographic, the numbers rose to 31 percent and 13 percent.
"We were surprised at the prevalence among young adults," said Amanda Lenhart, a senior research specialist at Pew. "But if you think of it as part of the wooing process today, then it doesn't really seem all that surprising."
Is the Weiner scandal - in which the married congressman finally confessed, after days of denying it, to tweeting a lewd crotch photo of himself to a woman in Seattle - a Mars vs. Venus moment? Do men see it differently than women?
Psychologist Gail Saltz thinks so. "For men, the sexual act is much more disturbing than anything else," said Saltz, who sees many couples in her Manhattan practice. "For women, what constitutes a betrayal is anyemotional or sexual interaction."
Of course, Saltz noted, men are more forgiving when it comes to judging other men, but not so much in judging their own partners. "A man would be extremely disturbed if his wife did any of this," Saltz said, referring to the type of activity Weiner says he engaged in.
Chantal Dupuis, 42, who lives in Montreal, thinks that men and woman are simply different creatures when it comes to all matters sexual.
"We don't think the same way, so we don't act the same way," Dupuis said. "Men have to feel manly, so they flirt more."
As for her own views, Dupuis, who is not married, is clear: "Online flirtation is infidelity, because thoughts are acts."
Psychologist Elana Katz said there is a potentially positive note to all of this: If the online activity doesn't go beyond the point of no return, a couple can learn from the ordeal, which in some cases is the first sign of trouble.
"Relationships can and do recover from this behavior, and in some instances the discovery is the first opportunity to ask the hard questions waiting to be addressed," Katz said.
That's what happened with Turner, who said the argument over her boyfriend's texting was the first the couple had ever had.
"We ended up discussing a lot of things we'd never discussed before," Turner said. And he likes the song she wrote, she said.
"He hadn't seen her since the seventh grade," the second verse says.
"She sent him a friend request.
Who knew something so innocent
Would cause this big old mess?"

PUB DUO GET BOOT FOR SEX PARTIES; Landlord's secret fetish nights at family-friendly boozer.(News)
Byline: ADAM ASPINALL
BY day the Crystal Fountain is a genteel child-friendly pub, set in a quiet suburban neighbourhood.
But by night the Grade II listed boozer, just a stone's throw from two primary schools, has been the setting for sordid swingers parties.
Landlord Kevin Scott and partner Kat have been running the secret events since taking over in October - without the knowledge of pub owners, Enterprise Inns.
Now the randy pair have been given their marching orders by the brewery and are being kicked out of the pub in Cannock, Staffordshire.
Kevin, 54, insists full sex does not take place on the premises but admitted other sexual acts might at the event - which has a 'no knickers policy'.
Last night local councillor Clive Morgan reacted with disgust at news of the sexy shenanigans.
He said: "I'm shocked and appalled that this has been going on under the noses of honest, decent, hard working citizens in my area.
"It's absolutely disgusting that something like this could happen in a nice family pub like the Crystal Fountain.'' The Sunday Mercury discovered the couple advertising their sex 'socials' on seedy swinging websites.
Randy Kevin and Kat, 30, described themselves online as "committed doggers" and posted a revealing picture from a Halloween bash at the Crystal Fountain.
They wrote: "We have recently moved from Yorkshire where we hosted many socials at our old pub. Our new pub is much bigger, so our socials are now on a bigger scale. The pub is a spacious four room pub with a large enclosed beer garden, which in the summer months is great fun!" The final farewell party was due to take place last night when up to 90 swingers from across the UK were expected to attend.
Previous events organised by the couple, who moved from Barnsley last year, have won warm reviews on internet sex forums.
One male swinger said he was literally bouncing after an earlier 'social' at the Crystal Fountain.
"It was the first time we have been to one of these parties so did not know what to expect - but it was fun,'' he said.
"I met some great people and had good fun on the bouncy castle with nothing on.
"Yes, that was me!" Our reporter went undercover to find out more about what goes on, and what comes off, at the Crystal Fountain.
He approached landlord Kevin outside the premises by posing as a first-time swinger. At first the pub boss was wary of our man, but soon warmed to his theme and chatted to us in the street, as innocent locals wandered by.
Kevin said: "We have been doing this for about eight years now in pubs up and down the country. That is how I met my partner actually and we have been together ever since.
"It's just a social event, you won't see any shagging or anything like that, although you never know, you will probably see someone getting a b*** j** or some other kind of play - so don't be surprised if you do see that going on.
"We don't get any trouble from the locals, we just shut the curtains and get on with it, to be honest with you. We have got about 90 people from all over the country coming on Saturday and it seems like the local hotels are completely booked up.
"We have all sorts coming from straights to gays to bi-sexuals to transvestites to transsexuals. You name it and they will be there.
"But it's not seedy, it is not like the 1970s or something.
''It is just a place for like-minded people to get together and meet other people without any pressure - although I do have a no knickers rule which I always enforce.
That helps to keep the atmosphere jovial.
"We also do things like raffles and this time we are having a tombola in aid of a leukaemia charity. If you're lucky you could win a dildo and some lube there."
But unfortunately for Kevin time has now been called on his stay at the Crystal Fountain, which is just a few hundred yards from a new Asda.
A spokesman for Enterprise Inns revealed the couple had been dismissed.
He said: "Following complaints from a member of the public, Enterprise Inns carried out a full investigation, as a result of which there will be a change of retailer at the Crystal Fountain."
Kevin and Kat were unavailable for comment last night.
But Coun Morgan said: "The sooner Mr Scott and his partner vacate that place the better for everybody in Cannock, it's utterly disgusting. It's one thing doing this in a proper swingers' club, but quite another in a popular family pub. It's outrageous."

Sportsbet.com.au Deploys Crossbeam's X-Series Platform.
Crossbeam Systems, Inc., a provider of next-generation security platforms for high-performance networks, announced that Sportsbet.com.au has successfully deployed its X-Series platform to ensure an uninterrupted and secure experience for users when betting online.
Year after year, the Company said Sportsbet.com.au, an Australian Internet betting and entertainment Web site, experiences tremendous growth in both the number of customers and transactions per second. During race days, Sportsbet.com.au sees massive spikes in traffic. The Spring Carnival horse races in 2010, for instance - Sportsbet.com.au's busiest period of the year - saw traffic peaks reaching 2,000 new connections per second. It is critical that the site offers visitors performance, quality of service and, most of all, high availability.
"Security is paramount to protecting our customers and the Sportsbet.com.au brand. We chose Crossbeam's X-Series because of its high-performance, best-of-breed security architecture and modular approach, allowing us to build redundancy at every level, scale easily and conduct maintenance without any service downtime," said Agustin D'Onofrio, IT operations manager at Sportsbet.com.au. "With Crossbeam, we are able to run a Check Point firewall and have the option to add other security applications to the chassis as needed. As we look to build out our security infrastructure, this level of flexibility is a major advantage."
According to a release, in the months leading up to the 2009 Melbourne Cup, Sportsbet.com.au was one of many Internet gaming sites that experienced a distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. While Sportsbet.com.au only saw service degradation for an hour or two, the IT organization sought to upgrade its firewalls - the first line of defense - and ensure the entire security infrastructure had the capacity, scalability and intelligence to handle any future attacks, without interruption of service.
The Company noted that Sportsbet.com.au initially started with an X-Series chassis combined with a Check Point firewall for the 2009 Melbourne Cup. The success of that deployment led Sportsbet.com.au to upgrade to Crossbeam's X-Series, the X80 - offering the highest levels of performance with a modular 14-slot chassis that can run up to 10 applications and scale to inspect a real-world mix of traffic at speeds up to 150 Gbps of throughput. Despite the heavy spikes in traffic experienced during the 2010 Melbourne Cup, Crossbeam delivered seamless and secure protection.
"The X80 platform exceeded our expectations," added D'Onofrio. "Our firewall CPU utilization during the busiest period was less than 10 percent, and feedback from customers was that the Sportsbet.com.au site was just as quick during the Melbourne Cup race as any other time during the year - making this a win-win situation for everyone."
"The growing popularity of online gambling makes it extremely important for brands such as Sportsbet.com.au to safeguard the experience for users," said Jim Freeze, Crossbeam's vice president of marketing and business development. "Not only do they have to deploy strong protection, they have to ensure their site can handle the massive influx of traffic during events. Sportsbet.com.au's use of the X-Series offers the best example of what the platform is designed to deliver - a high-performance, best-of-breed security architecture that lets customers enable their business through smart and scalable security."

Researchers from Tsinghua University describe findings in signal processing.
"This paper presents a high performance Network Security Processor (NSP) system architecture implementation intended for both Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol acceleration, which are widely employed in Virtual Private Network (VPN) and e-commerce applications. The efficient data transfer skeleton and optimized integration scheme of the parallel crypto engine arrays lead to a Gbps rate NSP, which is programmable with domain specific descriptor-based instructions for Gbps throughput IPSec and SSL applications," scientists in Beijing, People's Republic of China report.
"The descriptor-based control flow fragments large data packets and distributes them to the parallel crypto engine arrays, which fully utilizes the computation resources and improves the overall system data throughput. A prototyping platform for this NSP design is implemented with Xilinx XC3S5000 based FPGA chip set," wrote H.X. Wang and colleagues, Tsinghua University.
The researchers concluded: "The design gives a peak throughput for the IPSec ESP tunnel mode of 1.851 Gbps with over 1600 full SSL handshakes per second at a clock rate of 150 MHz."
Wang and colleagues published their study in the Journal of Signal Processing Systems for Signal Image and Video Technology (A Gbps IPSec SSL Security Processor Design and Implementation in an FPGA Prototyping Platform. Authentidate and EncounterCare Form ExpressMD Solutions Joint Venture to Provide Telehealth Vital Signs Monitoring Systems Designed to Improve Chronic Illness Care for Patients.
BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J., PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Authentidate Holding Corp. , a worldwide provider of secure workflow management software and web-based services, announced that it has formed a joint venture with EncounterCare Solutions, Inc. (OTC Pink Sheets: ECSL), a provider of technology and services for the home healthcare marketplace. The joint venture called ExpressMD(TM) Solutions will provide in- home patient vital signs monitoring systems and services to improve care for patients with chronic illnesses and reduce cost of care by delivering results to their health care providers via the Internet.
ExpressMD Solutions will combine EncounterCare's Electronic House Call(TM) patient vital signs monitoring appliances with a specially designed web-based management and monitoring software module based on Authentidate's Inscrybe(TM) Healthcare platform. ExpressMD Solutions will enable unattended measurement of patients' vital signs and related health information. Patients' data will then be securely sent electronically to each patient's health care provider for review. ExpressMD Solutions will be designed to aid wellness and preventative care, and deliver better continuity of care to specific patient segments such as the elderly, special needs or pediatric patients with chronic illnesses who require regular monitoring of serious medical conditions.
According to a January 2008 research study conducted at the State University of New York at Fredonia, the demand for patient monitoring systems in the primary healthcare sector in the United States is forecast to increase 5.9 percent per year to an estimated $12 billion market by 2012 based on expected contributions to positive therapeutic outcomes and efficiencies. Additionally, the study indicates that the market for self-monitoring activities will also expand as treatment for chronic care patients, especially patients with asthma, diabetes and heart disorders focuses on preventative care.
Using ExpressMD Solution's offerings health care providers will be able to easily view their specific patient's vital statistics and make adjustments to the patient's care plans via the Internet. ExpressMD Solution's easy to use patient monitoring system is intended to provide patients with increased peace of mind and improved condition outcomes through a combination of care plan schedule reminders and comprehensive disease management education on their in- home communication unit. The service will provide intelligent routing to alert on-duty caregivers whenever a patient's vital signs are outside of the practitioner's pre-set ranges. Health care providers and health insurers also are expected to benefit by having additional tools to improve patient care, and reduce overall in-person and emergency room patient visits.
"EncounterCare's expertise with in-home patient monitoring technologies and Authentidate's expertise in online healthcare systems and securely managing patients' documents has allowed us to shorten the development cycle and ready this solution for delivery in record time," said Ron Mills, CEO of EncounterCare Solutions, Inc.
"The ExpressMD Solutions joint venture will allow Authentidate and EncounterCare to leverage existing portions of our respective healthcare products as well as existing healthcare industry relationships from both companies," said Ben Benjamin, President of Authentidate Holding Corp. "The telemedicine market is a large market that we believe will benefit from our document management capabilities. By entering this market through a joint venture, we will be able to strongly penetrate an emerging market, while expanding the use of our platform within the health care community."
