Hauppauge Industrial Association wins $50K grant for plan for high- speed Internet access

The Hauppauge Industrial Association has received a $50,000 grantfrom the Empire State Development Corp. to develop a plan forproviding high-speed Internet access to the giant industrial park itrepresents.

About half of the park's 1,300 companies are consigned to slowdial-up Internet connections for assorted technical reasons, including distance limitations from a Verizon facility that offersdigital-subscriber line service.

Stony Brook University's Center for Wireless and InformationTechnology is conducting a study of the park and its businesses thatwill be the basis of a recommended plan.

Ann-Marie Scheidt, special assistant to the vice president forresearch/economic development at Stony Brook University, said thestudy was expected to be completed by early 2004.

Scheidt noted that businesses, anxious for faster service, haveput together a patchwork of broadband coverage from assortedsources, including satellite links.

The study is designed to provide a more coherent road map tobring high-speed service throughout the industrial park, one of thenation's largest. But officials said that it could take three yearsbefore broadband reaches all companies in the park.

The costs of the broadband hookups, when they are made available, are expected to be borne by the companies in the industrial park andtheir service providers.

Heading the study is Yacov Shamash, Stony Brook's vice presidentfor economic development, and point man in developing the CEWIT.

Assisting in the project are Computer Associates, SymbolTechnologies and the Long Island Power Authority.

The sprawling, 39-year-old industrial park covers 1,000 acres andonce was used as an antenna farm for ship-to-shore communications.
